From the Library

Fifth graders started off the year with a couple of old favorites. The Bearskinner, a Tale of the Brothers Grimm, retold by Newbery award-winning and local author Laura Schlitz, in which the usually less important middle daughter is the star of the show. Fifth graders who are middle daughters cheered. The rest of us also enjoyed it.

Ask your daughter how the soldier survived seven years wearing a bearskin.

We then read a story Your Question for Author Here by beloved authors Kate DiCamillo and Jon Sciezka. This is one of many stories in the Guys Read series. We thought this was an odd title for a series (girls love these books!) This volume is Funny Business. Ask your daughter about the letters written between student Joe Jones and author Maureen O'Toople.

Older girls are participating in the Bottom Shelf challenge. The lonely books who live on the bottom shelf of Fiction and Non-fiction are thrilled to be paid some attention. Girls will finish a bottom shelf book by the end of October.
